Scale & Cleans
To maintain a healthy mouth teeth and gums, we recommend a preventive scale and clean every six months. For those with early indications of gum disease more frequent visits are required. A professional clean, also known as a scale and clean, is designed to remove plaque and tartar that is unable to be removed with normal everyday brushing at home. Such regimes will help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
The first ‘scrape’ stage removes the deposits of plaque and tartar. Often an ultrasonic scraper is used first to get rid of the bulk of the tartar, followed by specialised hand held instruments to scrape away any stubborn remains.
The next step is to ‘polish’ the teeth to make the surface really smooth. While polishing removes stains leaving teeth bright and shiny, it is not just a cosmetic procedure. It also buffs minor imperfections and patches of rough texture on the teeth to protect against further plaque build -up. Our Dentist work in the mouth to gently remove calcified plaque and tartar build-up that has accumulated along the teeth and gums.
Even the most dedicated brushers will experience mild amounts of build-up between their check-up appointments. If left alone, this can lead to symptoms of gingivitis, gum disease or worse. When left behind, bacterial deposits and tartar can cause gum disease that leads to tooth and bone loss. Early stages of gum disease are swollen or bleeding gums, receding or injured gums which in turn lead to tooth sensitivity, lose teeth and cause tooth decay.
